No Legs. No Problem! A 6-year old Wrestler Inspires the World
When you think of wrestling, you think of the big hulking
macho men and women who exude ancient gladiatorial prowess. Bodies built for
smashing and pounding who dominate their opponents with ease. However, there’s
a little boy in Long Beach, Long Island that has smashed the hearts of his
community and now the world.
In a true display of courage, strength and inspiration,
6-year old Long Beach Gladiator Isaiah Bird is not your typical athlete. You
see he is homeless and oh yeah, he doesn’t have legs.
Due to a birth defect, Isaiah was born without legs but that
doesn’t stop him from being a tough competitor in the world of wrestling.
He found his calling for the sport in the midst of a life struggle
that goes beyond his physical being. He lives in a Glen Cove church shelter
with his mother and 1-year old brother. Because she can’t afford a wheelchair
he gets around on his hands. Life is very tough but the little fire ball has a
few things going for him. His mother encourages him to be whatever he wants to
be and his coach who believes in him without hesitation and doesn’t limit his
growth.
“I don’t need no legs. I’m a wrestler. I’m a gladiator! I’m
stronger than anybody!” Isaiah exclaimed. “I like winning. I have six medals.”
His game is so tight that he has won so many matches, he
qualified for the state tournament.
He is doing more without legs than those with two. You can’t
even tell there’s something missing when he wrestles. His legs may not be there
but his heart sure is. He is a true champion! Meet Isaiah Bird in this video
