Circle of Sisters Expo 2010 Jacob Javits Center – NYC

Caramel, coffee, light cream mocha, dark chocolate and even light buttermilk skin tones filled the Jacob Javits Convention Center the weekend of October 30th and 31st 2010 during WBLS’s 6th Circle of Sisters Expo. Upon entrance, smiles greeted over 30,000 people from all walks of life and backgrounds who gathered together to glean from experts in media, business, education, entertainment, culinary, health, self-help, fashion, literary and so much more.

This year's theme: RENEW RESTORE REBULD was not only to showcase and network with area businesses, small and large, but to encourage others to step out on faith and build their own brands.  Many of us who KNOW we have gifts and talents and should be using them for the betterment of mankind and to the glory of God but aren’t, need a little push (or a lot) to get moving and this was the place to get it.

Organizers planned the weekend well. There was something for everyone on both days. From panels in career changes, finance, health, relationships to spiritual awakening featuring guests such as Newark Mayor Cory Booker, Rev. Al Sharpton, Max Siegel, Omarosa Manigault-Stallworth, Terry McMillan, Attica Locke, Susan Chapman, Deborah Owens, Montel Williams, Sam Kass, Susan Taylor (Essence Magazine) and Tye &; Shante Tribbett just to name a few, a plethora of topics were discussed.

While the days fed the body and soul the evenings were for straight up entertainment. Saturday night bucked up with Eric Benet (dang he’s just too fine), Fantasia, Tank and Donnell Jones while Sunday brought the praise power with the Gospel Explosion featuring Tye Tribbett, Detrick Haddon and Vashawn Mitchell hosted by Steve Harvey ending with the COS fashion show showcasing the hottest designers around.

Although people ping ponged around bumping into one another in the crowded space, the vibe was peaceful. We got our shopping on while WBLS & WLIB personalities Nephew Tommy & Carla from the Steve Harvey Morning Show, EGYPT, Eddie Love, Keith Sweat, Brian Carter, Jeff Foxx, DJ Marley Marl “Golden Era Radio”, Sunday Classics with Hal Jackson & Debi B., Pastor Donnie McClurkin, Bishop Hezekiah Walker, Morgan Dukes and Liz Black broadcasted live. Each took time to greet their patrons and took some photos. Nephew Tommy is a fool and Mr. Sweat is smooth as wet ice!!

I can’t even begin to describe the entire ‘happening’ you just had to be there to experience it. For the entrepreneurs, a sea of vendors stuffed the convention hall left to right, up and down and all around the middle displaying their wares. Everything from bath and body products to shoes & bags to baked goods, tees, teas, paintings, and even free aids screenings were in that room the entire weekend. People, Razac was even doing hair right on the spot. Say what??!! They also had a children’s pavilion for babies 12 and under  that featured lessons in the arts, story-telling,  exercises and had a THRILLER dance lesson!  Didn’t I tell you that there was something for everyone?

As we walked through, others in entertainment ‘walked’ through. singers Eric Benet, Faith Evans, actor Tristian Wilds, WNBA basketball player Kim Hampton and recording artists Elizabeth Withers & Diggy Simmons were drawn to the excitement.

Well on the cooking stage (yep they set up an area with running sinks and all y'all), Chef Huda, Grace Foods, Sunny Anderson (The Food Network’s Cooking For Real), Jeff Henderson, Jacqueline Cholmondeley, Nikki Shaw (hosted Nephew Tommy) and Chef Nilka Hendricks blessed visitors with their brand of culinary tricks and recipes. I’m telling you, you had to be there to experience the love, the empowerment and desire these guests had to pour into the world.

Steve Harvey; author, comedian, actor, radio personality, husband, father, humanitarian and faith-filled man, signed copies of his latest book and auditions were held for the new Family Feud for which he is a host. His participation in the expo thickened the pot like rich countrified gravy.

I couldn’t stay for the entire weekend but what I got on Saturday will be with me for the rest of my life. I sat in on the Careers: A Brand New You paneled by Max Siegel, Marketing Innovator, Ella L.J. Edmondson Bell, Ph.D., President of ASCENT Leading Multicultural, Omarosa Manigault-Stallworth Reality Television star & business woman (yes THAT Omarosa she was awesome though), Lisa Price, Found of Carol's Daughter, Diane Ashley, Diversity Officer at Federal Reserve Bank of NY moderated by Chairman and CEO George Fraser of FraserNet, Inc. (See notes in a separate blog.) It was PHENOMINAL! Truly it was made for self-improvement and uplifting.

I loved the fact that so many people of color were together showing God’s glory through them. Descending the steps down into the main hall and seeing the action I knew it was on to the break of dawn. I didn’t have enough money to do all the things I would have liked to but that’s why there are business cards. The networking made deep impressions for continued patronage. Yes the hustle was on but it was a good hustle. If you don’t have a hustle for yourself, you better ask God to stir one up in you so that you can be in the mix the next time around.

It was my first and hopefully of many to come. I’d recommend that anyone, man, woman, white, black, Puerto Rican whomever, experience the trip of Circle of Sisters. I LOVE my people. We just don’t know the FULL power that’s in us. Wake up, lovelies and get it done!

Kudos to WBLS, FM NY!!
